Tomorrow at the United Nations

We'll be listening tomorrow as President Obama addresses a summit of the United Nations to assess progress on the Millennium Development Goals. Set in 2000, the goals are intended to be a roadmap toward halving extreme poverty by 2015 (click here for more about the MDGs).

Achieving the goals relies in part on wealthier states delivering on promises made to poorer states in 2000. Progress has stalled and many of these promises are unfulfilled. The United States must renew its commitment to the MDGs and call on other countries to do the same. In a new report from Oxfam concludes that it's not too late for governments to change course and meet the important goals set ten years ago.

Over thirty people gathered at an Oxfam Action Corps Minnesota event on Saturday. In addition to learning about disaster response in the developing world, everyone signed a petition calling on the Administration to create a new long-term US strategy to fight global poverty. We hope President Obama will announce this kind of commitment tomorrow. You can watch the speech live on the UN Webcast website.
