Riding for Climate Justice

This past Sunday members of the Oxfam Action Corps – MN team got up bright and early to greet cyclists warming up for New Belgium Brewing’s Urban Assault Ride. The bike scavenger hunt had riders crisscrossing the Twin Cities en route to their next bicycle obstacle course, and promote pedal-power commuting. According to organizers, it was their most successful first-time-in-a-city event, with nearly 500 cyclists participating.

Oxfam Action Corps – MN volunteers were there to emphasize the human face of climate change as well as appreciate the lively costumes and amazing array of bikes. The crowd was friendly and the organizers were fantastic. They powered speakers for the after-party with solar panels mounted on a mobile trailer they take with them around the country and minimized waste with compostable cups. We talked to quite a few riders before the race about how climate change is affecting vulnerable communities around the world, and were happy to find that many people are already doing their part by riding their bikes for transportation and limiting their personal carbon emissions. We even spoke to one of Twin Cities-based Peace Coffee’s bicycle coffee couriers, who recognized Oxfam from their work supporting fair trade coffee growers around the world.

Thanks to everyone who stopped by, and especially to the volunteers and event organizers who made our participation possible.

Before signing off, we’d like to remind you of two upcoming events:
  • Leticia Galeano speaking in Minneapolis and Northfield on September 25 and 26 about trade justice in her home country of Paraguay.
  • Minnesota Powershift – an exciting three day conference at Minneapolis’ Washburn High School focusing on climate, energy, sustainable development, and social justice. Register here to participate, or email us at minnesota@oxfamactioncorps.org to help us staff information tables during a panel discussion featuring climate change leaders from around the Twin Cities or during the evening’s entertainment featuring musical guest State Radio.
