At the recent G8 summit in Japan, leaders of the world’s most powerful nations established a non-binding goal of cutting global greenhouse gas emissions in half by 2050. Thanks to many of you who signed Oxfam's petition to G8 leaders asking them to take action on climate change and its impact on vulnerable communities.
While heartening to see the United States finally committing to some (again, non-binding) reductions, the pledges fall far short. Oxfam climate change policy spokesperson Antonio Hill said, “At this rate, by 2050 the world will be cooked and the G8 leaders will be long forgotten.... We need 80% cuts of 1990 levels by 2050 and emissions to peak and start falling by 2015..... The G8’s announcement on 2050 is just another stalling tactic that does nothing to lower the risk faced by millions of poor people right now.”
