Tackle climate change and its impact on the poor. Poor communities worldwide are already feeling the effects of climate change through increased drought and floods, severe storms, crop failure and the spread of diseases. Pass legislation that cuts global warming pollution, invests in helping vulnerable communities cope with climate change, and puts us on the road to a fair global climate deal in Copenhagen.
The petition was made available by Oxfam Action Corps - MN at Peace Coffee's amazing State Fair exhibit (click here to learn more and see pictures). Climate change legislation, soon to be considered by the US Senate, must substantially reduce carbon emissions and fund international climate adaptation at minimally 3% of revenues generated by the bill. The Waxman-Markey Bill, or American Clean Energy and Security Act, passed by the US House in July allows for just 1%. Adaptation projects help those most vulnerable cope with the effects of climate change, saving lives and livelihoods. Also, as recently reported by the New York Times-ClimateWire, adaptation projects stand to benefit American businesses, such as those who provide irrigation and well systems. Several Minnesota companies specialize in such fields.Add your voice to those calling for action by signing this petition by Sunday. Oxfam Action Corps - Minnesota has volunteer opportunities for people of all backgrounds and interests. To learn more, email us or attend our next monthly meeting, Monday, September 21 at 7:30pm at Common Roots Cafe in Minneapolis. At our casual meetings, we review news and plan nonpartisan activities promoting lasting solutions to poverty and injustice - all while enjoying the cafe's tasty fare. Come to learn more and meet like-minded individuals.
Thanks for everyone's support and stay tuned for developments.
