ACES Markup Begins Monday

The House Energy and Commerce Committee is scheduled to begin markup of The American Clean Energy and Security Act (ACES) on Monday, May 18, according to a committee statement. ACES has the ability to transition our nation to clean and affordable energy, create quality jobs, and could generate crucial international financing to help vulnerable communities cope with the devastating impacts of increased floods, droughts, famine, disease, forced migration, and armed conflict over resources.

ACES must pass into law with a sufficiently progressive schedule of carbon emission reductions to make a timely impact on curbing global warming while also funding cost-effective climate adaptation assistance. Click here for a YouTube video about a simple yet brilliant adaptation project has changed lives for the Borena people in Ethiopia. The project was conceived and implemented at the local level and it honors their culture and traditions. Through investing in projects like this, ACES could go a long way toward helping those who are hurting the most from - yet contributing the least to - climate change.

The initial markup of ACES is a single step on a long path toward becoming law. The inclusion of meaningful climate adaptation funding is critical. Join our local listserv and Oxfam America's Climate Change Action Team to stay up-to-date as this process continues.
