Farm Bill news:
Closed negotiations to breakthrough the 2007 Farm Bill gridlock continue. US House Agriculture Committee Chair Collin Peterson recently predicted the current Farm Bill will be extended by one month and the 2007/2008 Farm Bill will be passed by April 15. We remain very concerned that important reductions in unnecessary trade-distorting subsidies linked to poverty will loose out to the anachronistic status quo that, as TIME magazine described, "reflect[s] the power and savvy of the farm lobby..."
Reforms found in versions of the Farm Bill passed by the House and Senate, such as fair treatment for minority farmers, may be in jeopardy as the conference committee process continues. On March 3, Oxfam America issued a statement on ongoing efforts to ensure the Farm Bill is fair for all.
