The word is out: The 2007 Farm Bill passed by the US House falls far short of the reforms needed to make a difference for our small family farmers, our environment, and millions living in poverty because of current agriculture policy. In commentaries from the New York Times to the Saint Cloud Times, in editorials and letters representing each of the Twin Cities (Star Tribune & Pioneer Press), disappointment in the House is expressed - and hope for the Senate offered. As the the Cleveland Plain Dealer headline reads, "If Senate can break farm bill away from status quo, Americans could reap a more modern, more sensible policy."
The Senate's opportunity to correct the short-sightedness of the House is why spreading the word on Farm Bill reform is more critical than ever - so we're looking forward to the Square Lake Film & Music Festival! The Square Lake Festival is on August 18th along Square Lake, near Stillwater, MN. Check out their website for details on the impressive lineup of music, movies, and activities.
Look for the Oxfam Action Corps table at the festival to learn more about how you can help end the senseless poverty caused by the current Farm Bill. See you there!
